DWC, Inc. founder and executive director, Oya Amakisi, is featured in Tylor Norwood's film United States of Detroit. The movie made it's Detroit premiere to a packed audience at the Fischer Theater. United States of Detroit shows the dichotomy between the seemingly overwhelming challenges facing the majority of Detroit residents and the unwavering spirit of grassroots activists who refuse to give up. The film highlights grower Kadiri Sennefer, developer Derek Weaver, Pastor Barry Randolph of Church of the Messiah, graffiti artist Dj. Valdez and community organizer Oya Amakisi. The historic Fischer Theater hasn't featured a film in over 30 years. This rare event was attended by Metro Detroiters from Detroit and the surrounding suburbs.
