DWC, Inc. Represents at the Roots & Remedies Conference in Boston

July 14, 2018

The Praxis Projects' Annual Conference, Roots & Remedies was held in Boston from Friday, July 13th through Sunday the 15th at The University of Massachusetts’ Boston Campus.

“RESIST, HEAL, THRIVE – TOGETHER” was the theme of this year’s Roots & Remedies Gathering.  As the struggle for health justice continues, we must find ways to stand and support each other in love in order to build an equitable movement, while minimizing the effects of continued trauma to our most vulnerable communities.  Doing this work in our individual silos will no longer work; if we are to move forward, all of us must work collaboratively, in unity and true solidarity.

And, despite all this, we must find ways to celebrate our cultures and identities in order to thrive, as we are a resilient and courageous people regardless of resources made available to us.

DWC, Inc. members attended workshops on Building the Plane While Flying It:  Responding to the Challenges of Board Development and Nonprofit Statuse with Community Based Organizations facilitated by seasoned activists Pablo Soto (La Plazita Institute) and Alberto Luera (Fe Y Justicia Workers Center).

Hermano Luera agreed to a 1 on 1 session with the DWC, Inc. Executive Director on Board Development and Funding.

We also attended the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative Land Trust has existed for over 40 years.  They gave amazing tours of their community owned businesses, rebuilt neighborhoods, and collaborative gardens.

We must resist the efforts of the opposition to destroy the progress that has been made over the last 50 years.
We must view the act of healing and self-care as a consistent form of decolonization, as new traumatic experiences build upon the old hurled at our communities by racist and oppressive institutions.

Board member Aba Ifeoma and Talibah Smith attended the Spirit in Motion Wellness Shield, a workshop brought together breathing, movement, and connection to the elements (earth, air, water, fire, wood, and metal) to recommit to self and deepen our awareness of the importance of creating a wellness shield.  This workshop supports our organization's goal to work in a healthier and affirming paradigm that supports the whole being of the staff and the people we serve. This amazing workshop was facilitated by JaceLynn Moreno, Pauline Brooks, and Shash Yazhi Charley.
